Music has evolved a lot since the times of Mozart and Bharat Muni. From people playing with sticks to playing with theremin to produce music, the world has seen a lot of advancements. With each advancements and experiments many music genres have also generated. Today I want to share a bit about the Indie Rock genre.
Indie rock translates to ‘Independent Rock’. Independent here refers to the bands that do not have any backing from a production company or music banner. Indie Rock is a subgenre of Rock music. It originated in 1970s in UK, USA and New Zealand and then eventually expanded in other countries. Wikipedia covers a great deal about its history which is very fascinating. So, instead of quoting the page, I’ll add the page here
If you like indie music you might have Indie playlist on Spotify sometime on loop. However, Indie music now is not what it originated as. Indie music is now more known as “Vibe” . The songs that are feel good, they feel easy to digest.
In Indian context, Indie rock as music was more appreciated in Chandigarh and Delhi. Bands like The Local Train, Indian Ocean, Parikrama, Agnee these all are Indie Rock bands. Chandigarh used to be a hub for budding artists but now it’s bangalore. Bangalore is currently setting up the stage for all the budding independent artists. But sticking to Indie Rock specifically, the communities and opportunities are in abundance. I will come to you soon 😤

What else can be said about Indie Rock? for me personally I like Indie rock it’s not harsh as rock and is easy to digest. If I have to recommend any artist, I am currently listening to Raman Negi’s solo album (after breaking up with the band :’) ) Shaksiyat. It is a beautiful album, minimal drama, maximum output. From lyrics to music everything is perfectly packed up unlike his hair.
There is another band called Against the Current, pretty dope, they are growing well and I am loving it! They started as artists covering songs and now they are relaesing their albums, doing world tours but keeping the music ‘rock’ solid as before.
That was my very brief gyaan on Indie Rock, I just wanted to share music today so, unjoi 😬
